I dreamed once of three kneeling figures. All were waiting for Jesus to pass by. As the Lord came down the path, He stopped and embraced the first figure. When He came to the second figure, He gently laid His hand on her shoulder. But when He passed the third kneeling figure. He only smiled and kept on walking. Someone said to the master, "You must love the woman you embraced more than the others." "No, you don't understand' He said gently. 'The one I embraced needs my encouragement. She is weak in the faith. The one I tapped lightly on the shoulder is stronger. But the third one, the one I merely smiled at, is strong. I never need to worry about her, for she is with me constantly."

Tim Hansel tells of a seminary professor who set up his preaching class in an unusual way. He scheduled his students to preach on the Good Samaritan. One by one they were to go from classroom to classroom, preaching love and compassion for others. Some students had 10 minutes between classes, but others had less time, which forced them to rush in order to meet the schedule. Each of the students had to walk down a certain corridor and pass by 'a beggar' who had been deliberately 'planted' there by the professor. What happened was a powerful lesson! The number of would-be-preachers who stopped to help this man was extremely low, especially those who were under the pressure of time! Rushing to preach their sermon on the Good Samaritan, they walked right past the beggar at the heart of the parable!

A young ensign had almost completed his first overseas tour of sea duty, when he was given an opportunity to display his ability at getting the ship underway. With a stream of commands, he had the decks buzzing with men and soon the ship had left port and was steaming out of the channel. The ensign's efficiency had been remarkable. In fact, the deck was abuzz with talk that he had set a new record for getting the destroyer underway. The ensign glowed at his accomplishment and was not all that surprised when another seaman approached him with a message from the captain. He was however, a bit surprised to find that it was a radio message, and he was even more surprised when he read, "My personal congratulations upon completing your underway preparation exercise according to the book and with amazing speed. In your haste, however, you overlooked one of the rules...make sure the captain is aboard before getting underway!"
